Cooking Tips: The Art of Freezing Food

Here are some tips on how to freeze food.

  1. Always cool food off completely before freezing.
  2. Double wrap baked goods before freezing. Wrap items airtight in plastic wrap, and then wrap them a second time in aluminum foil. To thaw: thaw at room temperature while still double-wrapped.
  3. Mark foods you’ve wrapped for freezing, to indicate what it is, and the date it was frozen.
  4. While egg yolks don’t freeze well, the whites do. If you make something with only yolks, place the egg whites in a one-cup plastic storage containers, so they’re already measured out for an angel food cake! All you need do is thaw them to proceed with your recipe.
  5. Freeze homemade baby food in ice cube trays, to get individual portions for baby.
  6. You can also freeze stock in ice cube trays to cool off a hot bowl of soup quickly.
  7. Got leftover wine you hate to waste? Freeze it in containers for later cooking, such as for braising meat or chicken or for making stews.

Cooked and Baked items that are good to have in your freezer:

  • Sliced pot roast in gravy
  • Casseroles and kugels
  • Chicken soup
  • Bone broth
  • Cakes and breads

Items that are Best Stored in the Freezer:

  • Nuts
  • Seeds
  • Yeast
  • Bones for bone broth
